Ancient Order of Hibernians – Atlantic County #1
Ofc. Thomas McMeekin Jr. Memorial Division
P.O. Box 594 Atlantic City, NJ 08404 – Thomas McMeekin Jr Scholarship Fund
The Ancient Order of Hibernians is America’s oldest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization founded concurrently in the coal-mining region of Pennsylvania and New York City in May, 1836. The early Irish societies were born of a need in the mid-fifteen hundreds to protect the welfare of fellow Irish Catholics, and especially the clergy who risked immediate death to keep the Catholic Faith alive in occupied Ireland after the Penal Laws of 1691. The AOH in America was founded at New York’s St. James Church on May
4, 1836 by men emulating these Irish societies, to protect the clergy and churches from the violent American Nativists who attacked Irish Catholic immigrants and Church property. At the same time the vast influx of Irish Immigrants fleeing Ireland’s Great Hunger in the late 1840′s, prompted a growth in many Irish societies in the USA – the largest of which was, and continues to be, the AOH.
The Atlantic County #1, Ofc. Thomas McMeekin, Jr. Memorial Division started on February 22, 2012, with several of Tommy’s family members and friends alongside Tommy’s brother Andrew. They were sworn-in at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. William Hodge who is the division’s spiritual guide and inspiration. Tommy was married at St. Nicholas and often assisted with decorating the Church and other projects. The division calls St.
Nicholas home, utilizing the Church rectory as a prayerful meeting place every third Wednesday of the month. The Atlantic County Division of the AOH has several goals and worthy causes that they are committed to locally and abroad. The foremost local cause is the Ofc. Thomas McMeekin, Jr. Scholarship Fund which the division started in Spring 2013.
Officer Thomas McMeekin, Jr was a native of Atlantic City. He lived a life dedicated to public safety, serving on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol and Atlantic City Police Department. Tommy’s life ended tragically after he was struck by a tour bus while directing traffic at an accident scene near the casino strip about 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 3rd, 2005. He died at about 1:45 a.m. at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center on Friday morning, March 4th 2005. He was a five year veteran of the department. Tommy left behind his wife Jen, daughter Adria, and his loving family. Each year on the anniversary of his death family and friends gather to celebrate his life and dedication to his career and family. His spirit lives on among all those who knew him, and in his daughter’s bright smile. Tommy was a dear friend, brother, son, husband, and father. He continues to be an inspiration to all who knew him and to those who learn of his life story through the AOH.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians, Atlantic County #1, Ofc. Thomas McMeekin Jr. Memorial Division is humbled by the gratitude and support the McMeekin family has shown in the founding of our division. They have allowed us to honor Tommy by having our Division bear his name, and offer this scholarship in his honor.
